Brick Patio

By jackin

Hi All,

We just built a house and have a lot of bricks left over, can someone give me an idiots guide to constructing a patio with them. I know zero about mortaring or grouting.

Chrisjob  is right.  It's in lots of how-to texts, and the sand acts is great b/c it acts as a stabilizer and it allows for a bit of necessary shifting.  There is the matter of drainage--I think after you dig your spot to a certain depth (again, see how to) then there's gravel for drainage, landscape fabric, bricks and sand involved.  Lots of leveling (sp?) and a stiff brush to work the sand into the cracks and probably some other stuff come into play, but grout and mortar are not part of the plan.  me, I keep meaning to do this project myself but the combination of digging in dirt, sand, and bricks would prove too, too tempting for my brood of small boys.

 good luck, leslie

I don't think you have to mortar or grout a brick patio. I think you flattened the surface, then arrange the bricks, tamp them down, then spread sand in the cracks.

I'll bet this is in alot of those "ultimate home how-to" volumes, so check some out at the library. Good luck.
