Gas Fireplaces. Alternatives to fake logs?

By incubus_of_habit

We're finishing our basement into a 'poor mans' loft space. We're staining the concrete floors, leaving a lot of the ceiling exposed, possibly putting in a concrete-topped built in desk in the office area.

On one side of the basement we have a massive original brick fireplace. We've decided to get a gas insert. We chose the plainest/cleanest insert we could find (not a fan of the brass/wrought iron/etc.)

The only thing that really bugs me about it is the fake logs. They're tacky.

Questions:

1) Can the fake logs be replaced? If so, how? (The fireplace store, while having a large selection, seems to not know anything about modern design nor why I'd want to replace the logs (they just give me funny looks)).

2) Any resources? I've seen photos in Taunton books and posts on Apartment Therapy and the like of gas fireplaces using crushed glass (see photo), lava stones, stainless steel, etc. But I haven't found a source/store for these items. Know of any?

You might want to try Moderustic; they make fireplace glass. I'm sure they could answer any questions you may have about log removal/replacement.

P.S. I love those fake logs; especially those ones with the lightbulb in the back and the fan that makes the tinsel flutter to make it look like 'real' fire. One of my uncles had one when I was a kid and I was mesmerized. I had the same reaction to his Lava Lamp.
