Magnetically-Levitated Axial Flux Alternator with Programmable Variable Coil Resistance, Vertical Axis Wind Turbine

I dont know how to make it pretty, a 4 foot tall cone on your roof, but its a cool idea-  worth taking a look at. Check out their website http://www.mag-wind.com/ tell me what you think of that silver flam fighting it out with the chimney- :)

I think this is the coolest thing. I wonder what the pay back is? Of course that isn't entirely the point. I think if you were building a house, you could  incorporated the design of the turbine into the design of the home itself. Maybe a turbine-shaped turret for a little symmetry?

Senseless: Electric airboat? I use solar cells to charge two marine batteries for the electric motor I use to steer my sailboat to a tricky boat ramp that's not safe to use otherwise.  Seen the tunable rotor sails for sailboats? This is the best link i could find quickly: http://www.rotorboat.com/ but there are larger and nicer systems out there.  I remember seeing a tri-masted very large research vessel using rotor sails (Cousteau's? Greenpeace's?).  They operate on the same principle as the turbine generator in this article.

I think the claims of it's power output where a bit skewed...

I've been trying to think of something useful to do with the breeze that always comes off the lake and I keep  thinking I should build an electric airboat and use some simple dc motors to keep the batteries charged.

I just thought this one deserved a photo, here's the electricity-generating vent houseplanarchitect is talking about:

WICKED KEWL!  This isn't really a roof vent, it is an electricity generating wind turbine. It will look like a UFO landed on a conventional tract house, but on a strange concrete box like mine it would do just fine. ;o)

I was actually looking for this type of system a few months ago, and everything I found was a bladed thing that had to stick way up and would PO the neighbors for blocking their view.  This is nicely compact and looks architectural (at least on my structure).  There's even a dealer near me.  Thanks for the link!
