Promote Your Curbly Page With Business Cards

By gregoryjohnson Curbly-card

This is the card we are using in Iowa City to promote Curbly. By using VistaPrint.com we were able to get them for just the cost of shipping and handling. I ordered a bunch for the Iowa City Area Curbly Users Group, but plan to order some for myself to promote my own personal Curbly site as well. If you go to VistaPrint.com be sure to signup for their mailings because that's when you'll get the special offers for other free stuff. Otherwise, you'll pay retail prices just like everyone else who goes to the site. To signup for the... »MORE

Where is Gregory?

By gregoryjohnson Dsc04489_medium

Hi Curby Friends! Thanks for the recent posts and positive comments! I'm sorry I've been active for a while - other than a few new photos. I was busy with Curbly related events off the Internet. Here in Iowa City, we had our first Curbly users group meeting which went well. There are three more meetings/training sessions scheduled for this month. We've printed up Curbly Cards (for free at the vistaprint.com website) and are getting those passed out. I have some fun DIY projects I've been wanting to post, but it will take me a little while to get that... »MORE

Make Photo Art With CDs

By gregoryjohnson Cd-art-dsc05593

Because of such a positive response to the Make Photo Art with Water and Oatmeal blog entry, this additional entry on photo art has been created. The rainbow-like images seen here are close-up photos of a CD tilted in just the right angle to catch the light. The light source for these images was a typical overhead office area florescent light fixture with four full-length bulbs. The CD and camera were held as still as possible during the taking of the photo. The camera was held approximately 5 to 7 inches away from the CD surface. These photos were are... »MORE

Make Photo Art With Water and Oatmeal

By gregoryjohnson Oatmeal-water-drops-dsc05574

Photo Art Unique photos are a great way to decorate your home. Here's how to make this photo art image titled "Oatmeal Drops." There's also a post showing how to make art using reflected light on a CD. 1. Place organic oatmeal in a small bowl and pour boiling water on it. There should be about one inch of airspace between the oatmeal and the top edge of the bowl. 2. Quickly cover the hot oatmeal with a very high-grade clear plastic surface such as Plexiglas. This actually helps the hot water 'cook' the oatmeal. In this example, the Plexiglas... »MORE

Carpet Just Got Stained? Consider Eco-Carpet!

By gregoryjohnson Florcatalog-com-diningroom_02_detail

It can be a real pleasure to spend a relaxing evening at home sitting by the fireplace with the love of your life... until you realize that somebody accidentally knocked over a bottle of wine. You could spend the rest of the night with a can of carpet spray-foam cleaner scrubbing away the stain and arguing over which one of you spilled the bottle. However, if you've ever tried to clean a stain from carpet, you know that often times the spot you are cleaning creates a dirty ring larger than the original spill. So, then you bring in the... »MORE

Need somewhere to go while renovating?

By gregoryjohnson Tablegarden

Let's say you live near Peterborough, Ontario and you're in the midst of a world-class renovation of your home. That's the good news. The bad news is that your home is nearly inhabitable during the more intense phase of renovation. The fresh paint smell is getting to you and the sound of drilling, hammering, and other power tools is making it difficult to get your work done at home during the day. So, what can you do? Why not stay at a guest house. I just found out about the King Bethune House - a guest house and spa in... »MORE

Does Your Apartment or Rental Prohibit Painting?

By gregoryjohnson Desk_large

Decorative fabric makes an excellent backdrop particularly in a rented room or apartment where painting isn't an option. It can add texture and patters that wouldn't otherwise be possible with paint or wall-paper. It's also easy to change when you get bored of it - unlike paint or wall-paper.Pictured here is a desk with very sheer fabric hanging on the wall behind it. The fabric has natural earth tones and a pattern of various leaves. On the desk are small naturally colorful smooth stones. There is a picture frame with pressed flowers in antique glass surrounding a motivational quote.More about this... »MORE

Standing In Awe Among the DIY Giants

By gregoryjohnson Dsc04197

Well everyone, I'm feeling tinier and tinier here among the DIY Giants. First there was DIY-Maven's "How to Flip a House in 90 Days" posting. The size of that project made me feel like a DIY poser. Now there's THIS post: "French Fry Factory into Massage Spa" by RayDawg88. The before pics are daunting. A French Fry Factory? That place would need a major renovation just to be turned it into a horse barn. The "after" photos are amazing (page1, page2, page3). I don't suppose there's any point, now, in submitting my "How to Flip a Dog House in Three... »MORE
