manly tote for grocery shopping

By gnadia

My hippie manly man refuses to use plastic/paper grocery bags at the check out. I've offered to make him a tote bag, but of course that wouldn't be manly. Saw a recent post about a jersey tote, but that would be too girly for him... perhpas something other than a tote is needed? So, any ideas for a masculine reusable grocery bag?

Home Depot is now selling bright orange logo-emblazened reusable bags for something like $3-4.  They clip onto the cart for easy filling, so that's a plus.  And they say "Home Depot" on the side, which might be manly enough. ;)

What about a back pack? Surely he can't find all backpacks to be girly considering the rugged, hiking, etc. ones they have available nowadays. It would probably fit just as much as any tote depending upon the size of one you get him and it could be used for more things than just groceries. Just an idea :)

Here's a great website for useful scientific and surplus stuff: www.sciplus.com.  While browsing I came across a used military rucksack.  It doesn't have the frame or straps, so would need something crafty to make it work.  Only $7.95.  Look up item 37055 CANVAS BACKPACK.

Ha, yes, I saw that one, but even in army camoflauge print it's iffy... :))

Would this tote done in manly fabrics be masculine enough for him?

Just in case the html doesn't work:

Yeaa, I was thinking about a messenger sort of bag like the kind kids were attempting to use as backpacks a couple of years ago.  (I think they discovered that a backpack is better for 100 lbs. of books.)  We got one at Old Navy years ago, in fact, I still have it upstairs.  If I can, I'll photograph it and post ASAP.

it's killing me because i can't find a decent picture anywhere, but i remember seeing somewhere a grocery tote that was more like a sling/messenger bag worn across the chest. it seems like your man might be a little bit more comfortable with that type of bag. i wish i could re-locate it! it seemed like an easy diy project. i'll keep you updated if i do.

I found this website one day and I absolutely love these bags. They're very afforadable and they come in tons of colors, manly and otherwise. Plus, they fold up to be ultra portable. I hope this helped.

If you really insist on making him a reusable bag, I really like the idea presented by ttucker.

How about trying something in burlap or hemp.  Style it after the ubiquitous brown paper bag with rope handles.  Idea is to be reusable, not necessarily replace the utilitarian design of the grocery bag.
