I ran across some disc-shaped magnets on Amazon a while back, and I got to thinking… wouldn’t they be perfect for creating a knife rack? And since we were in desperate need of a new one, I got right to work. And today I’m sharing the simple tutorial with you. Click through to check it out!

The end result has a rustic vibe, but the silver tone magnets give it a contemporary feel. And it’s pretty simple to assemble! So let’s get started.

Here’s what you’ll need for your knife rack:

  • Reclaimed or distressed wood, size 20 x 6 x 1/2″
  • Wood stain in your preferred color
  • Old rag
  • Gloves
  • Pencil
  • E6000 glue
  • Strong disc-shaped magnets (I bought these)
  • Measuring tape and/or ruler
  • Electric drill with philips head bit
  • (2) 1.25″ wood screws and a drill bit that matches the size of the screw heads
  • Blue painter’s tape (not pictured)

Begin by staining your wood with an old rag, according to the directions on the can. Be sure to wear gloves or you will stain your hands along with the wood. Let it dry.

Measure out where the center point of each magnet will go. This will vary depending on the diameter of your magnets and how many you have. If you use the same magnets that I did (they come in a pack of 10), you will place the center point every 1 3/4″ starting from the center of the wood. Place a pencil mark at each of those spots.

Next, put a dollop of E6000 glue on the back of a magnet. If you’re planning to attach other magnetic items to the magnets in addition to knives, make sure to test them first to make sure they attract and don’t repel. Place the center point of the magnet on one of the pencil marks. You’ll need to do every other magnet to begin with, otherwise the magnetic pull will be too strong for the wet glue and will pull the magnets across the surface of the wood. Trust me.

Let these dry for at least an hour. Then do the other magnets in between, leaving one at each end off. These spots will be where you screw the rack to the wall, and then you will glue the last two magnets over the screws so you won’t be able to see them. You will probably need to secure the drying magnets with painter’s tape so they don’t try to slide over to their neighbors.

In the two remaining spots without magnets, drill very shallow holes (about 1/8″) so that the screw heads will be flush with the surface of the wood when you screw them in.

Attach them to the wall using the screws and electric drill (you will probably need an extra set of hands for this). Once it is securely attached to the wall, glue the last two magnets over the screws and secure them with painter’s tape while they dry.

Once everything is dry, remove the tape and you’re all finished! Let the glue cure overnight before hanging any knives on the rack.

It’s a much nicer solution than those boring store-bought plastic versions… and you can choose a stain which matches the other finishes in your kitchen. Or you might opt to paint it instead if you’re looking for a pop of color.

You could also make it longer or shorter depending on how many knives you have. Have fun with it!
