I'm trying to get the sophisticated cottage/beach look for my family/eating/kitchen space but things are going horribly wrong - help! Empty-nester who should be downsizing and off-loading all the stuff I've hoarded. Chronic diy-er . .  just remodeled laundry room - new floor, paint, light, sink, replaced shelves with cabinets on 2 walls. That stuff's easy - but I'm clueless when it comes to the furniture and accessory arranging and window treatments.

When you look at the pictures of my family room/dining area/kitchen you'll be able to see that I need help bad! The these three areas make up the back of my house on the first floor. The dining room and another room that is supposed to be a formal living room (but is a catch-all room now because we don't want a formal LR but don't know what else to make it!) make up the front of the house on this level. There are several windows and a french door the length of the house so I think that I should treat them all the same, n'est pas?  Since I live on a creek and you can see the water from all the windows on this side of the house I'm trying to achieve a beachy-cottagey feel.
