External siding for a new house?
By cooljamesI'm looking for building materials for a new house I'm currently designing. Specifically, external siding. I hate the commonplace corrugated metal, but I hate the standard lap siding look more. Does anyone have any leads on modern-looking external siding materials? My requirements are:
- not ridiculously expensive, cheap will win
- weather resistant (we have a west-facing exposure that gets hammered in windy storms)
- colorful (the more options the better)
- durable, something that doesn't need a ton of attention/maintenance

Another one for hardipanel! I like the way it looks, and it is really versatile. You can cut it into shapes, strips, squares, etc. It doesn't have to be painted, or sealed, but can be.
FWIW, I love that apartment building!

Hardipanel seems like a great choice. This group is really helpful.
Good luck with your house,

I'm not really sure how cheap it is, and some of it probably falls under the standard lapped siding look, but fibre cement siding comes in all sorts of colours, is weather resistant (we use it a lot on Vancouver Island), and the only maintenance needed is usually painting. The James Hardie site shows the different kinds available. Aside from lapped siding, they have vertical siding and shingle type siding. I guess it's not really modern looking, but it mostly depends on the application. The most modern buildings around here tend to be almost entirely glass with some concrete. There's also a building my company is working on that uses tile on the walls, but I think that's probably pretty expensive. I think you could easily get an Asian-influenced organic modern look with earth-toned vertical siding. Or just go for crazy colours like my apartment building.
