DIY Nav-mat for GPS?

By coffeequeen

Yikes! Those things cost $42 each! You know, the heavy bean-bag ringed mats that you can put on your dash bod and either lay your phone and gps in or suction them into. Any ideas how I might make one of my own? My GPS won't suction to my van windshield, for whatever reason, and the dashbd is made from the wrong material to allow suctioning. Ideas sure would be appreciated!

I'm in the same situation.  I just can't see spending $42 for one of those. I've seen some on-line for about $9, but their's a $14 shipping charge! Still too much.  I've been working on some DIY plans in my head.  I thought I could make my own for under $5, but I think it will be closer to $10. My current plan is to make my own bean bags using BBs (as in air gun ammo.) for the beads.  The bean bags will hold down some kind of non-slip material, and there will be a flat piece of plastic in the center for the suction cup to stick too.  I've seen some units similar to this on-line for about $9, but their's a $14 shipping charge!

Well of course! That's a great solution! Thanks, Vince!

I live in Minnesota where it's illegal to suction a gps to the windshield, but since I need one, here's what I did.

I bought a small role of sticky velcro and taped the soft side to the underside of the gps and the hard side to the appropriate spot on the dash. I know some model's are thin, so this wouldn't work, but it works great on mine!

I drive a 2005 Chevy Trailblazer, and I keep my Garmin Streetpilot 550 right in the middle of the dash, angled where I can see it easily.

Hope this helps!
