make your own crystal snowflake

By ckilgore 0206_kids_gtsnowflake_large

How do y'all feel about the big momma of craft ladies, Martha Stewart? I know, for some reason, I shouldn't like hr, but dammit, some of the stuff she (or her staff) come up with is so cute. And it really made me sad that they quit publishing Martha Stewart Kids, because that was the best mag in the whole line of publications. All the activities, the graphics ... it was just yummy. What was I talking about? Oh yeah ... crystal snowflakes. I saw this post on how to make your own using borax and pipe cleaners over at marthastewart.com... »MORE

By ckilgore Table_00004_-_white_room_-_storefront_large

I got an email today from Christian Schoeneman over at Plan Canvas LLC, and he has a great idea. He sells plans for modern furniture that is designed to be simply build with minimal tools at a low cost. Looks like a good start for people like me who are pretty handy, but have a hard time in the planning stages. »MORE

where to hang the stockings?

By ckilgore 239291136_37bcf8638d_medium

Like many people, I imagine, I don't have a fireplace or a mantel, so I am sort of at a loss as to where to hang the stockings for a family of 4. It seems weird to have them just stuck on the wall with hooks or something, but I am not sure what else to do. Anyone have any ideas or came up with something cool in a similar situation?  »MORE

Turn an old book into a photo frame

By ckilgore Bookframe_large

Here's a super-simple project to turn an old book into a creative frame I saw at fototiller . My dad is an English professor and I will definitely have to make a couple of these for christmas gifts. Find an old book with a cool cover - check out the dollar/free bins of books at used bookstores. You want to find an old book with a sturdy cover that will look good with a frame cut out of it.On the inside of the front cover, trace around the photo you want to frame.Use a strong knife (I used a box-cutter) to... »MORE

Decent vanity light fixture?

By ckilgore 239291136_37bcf8638d_medium

Currently I am lucky enough to have a vanity area outside our bathroom, but it has one of those butt -ugly hollywood lighting strips above it. I like the amount of bright, even light it provides, but  it is totally horrendous. My wish list is that it has to be inexpensive (under $100) clean-lined and still provide good light. I am pretty handy, so DIY solutions would be welcome. Thanks in advance for the help. »MORE

going to my happy place ...

By ckilgore 35338411_dd08812f4c_m_large

With my spirit animals (aka my family).       The living room is what made us buy the house we have now. i guess current terminology would call it a "great room," which it is, you know, great, don't get me wrong. But "great room" sounds so massive and unfriendly. Our living room may not be great in the classical sense, but it is definitely the room we live in.    When we moved in we found the original plans for the house and could see that it used to be divided into a living room and den, and someone since then knocked... »MORE
