Floating stairs? I'll try anything once

By Doug Aamoth Samalot_4

I'll be honest; these stairs don't look safe. I know they look cool but how cool would you look hugging the wall all the way up? I'd be petrified. And what a spot to park your laptop! This staircase was designed by Jordi Vayreda of Spain for a real-life client who now has the floating stairs in his or her real-life home. I'd be interested to know if the staircase has some sort of weight limit. Any physics whiz kids out there care to comment on how you'd have to build stairs like these to support the weight of a... »MORE

A Bug's Life: the naughty bits...

By Ken Hoyt Green-porno

Frankly I have an interest in only a half dozen bugs (mostly because we meet regularly in my garden). But the luminous daughter of the legendary Ingrid Bergman is consistently too captivating to miss... Isabella Rossellini could make drying paint seems fascinating. Now, it seems, she has a thing for the sex lives of bugs. (It's Isabella. So go ahead, deal me in.) She created eight very informative, and highly entertaining, short films on the love lives of common denizens * of our own backyards. The series, Green Porno, will run on the Sundance Channel and, more conveniently, on their... »MORE

Shop at Oprah’s New Boutique

By DIY Maven 419

Uber talker Oprah Windrey has opened a store in Chicago’s West Loop. According to The Washing Post, ‘The Oprah Store dishes up 900 of Oprah Winfrey’s favorite things.’ The store manager, Darcy Rogers says that the store is filled ‘with all the colors she loves and a clean, urban, loftlike look.’ The shop occupies a 5,500 space at 37 N. Carpenter Street, which is near her studio, and ‘features brown-and-green marble counters and a soundtrack of African drums.’ According to Ms. Rodgers, ‘When you walk in the store, you feel like Oprah is standing there,’ which, I guess, is a... »MORE

2 Carat Cup

By DIY Maven 42831

You could describe this as a cup with a built in 2 carat diamond ring, or as a diamond ring with a built in cup. Either way, it's a fun and glamourous way to sip your morning java.  Available with 'gold' or 'platinum' rings, the mug comes packaged in an oversized flip-up ring box, which, when opened, only reveals the ring. The diamond is actually a Swarovski crystal. Available at Spoon Sisters for $15.95. »MORE

Dress for Success: Superhero-style

By Ken Hoyt Superhero-1

The always fascinating Metropolitan Museum of Art has never been at a loss for exhibitions to draw in the normally art averse. Who needs to study brush strokes when there are actual temples from antiquity and entire rooms from stately homes? The Costume Institute (originally curated by the fabulous Diana Vreeland) has stepped out of it's usual role of historic investigation with Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy * show set to run through this summer. It is much more than a sampling of all things spandex. The show details the effect these larger-than-life characters have on fashion from the athletic field... »MORE

Still Thirsty?

By Ken Hoyt Water_droplet_blue_bg05

Single use water bottles are an expensive delivery system for a relatively generic product. And they're expensive on the back end, because few of them actually get recycled. Even some of the reusable bottles, although a greener solution, may have a sickening side effect. In The New York Times article, Perceptions: Go Ahead, Put the Water Bottle Down, Nicholas Bakalar finds that there is little evidence to support the widely held belief that we need 8 glasses of water a day. Actually if you're really thirsty, all of the time maybe you should consult your doctor. For more posts, like... »MORE

Drunk Butt Chicken Heads

By DIY Maven 41kuzh2idbl

Continuing with the BBQ theme, let’s discuss the popular trend of shoving a can of beer up the rear of a chicken before placing said meal on the Weber. Apparently, the chicken comes out moist and dead drunk. (Get it? Dead drunk. Heh.) Anyhoo, now to humiliate the poultry even more, you can stick one of these ceramic heads on the chicken before it’s cooked. You can find them on Amazon for 15 bucks a head. (Get it? A head. Heh.) Via Greenhead.     »MORE
