A New Look for Curbly!

By bruno

It's been over a year since we first launched the site, and it felt like time for a re-design, so after many long hours of coding, I'm pleased to announce the re-launch of Curbly.com!

The new design features more readable typography and more whitespace around key elements like blog posts and profile info. It's based on a 14-column grid layout, which should give us lots of flexibility in how we arrange content:

No grid

With the 14-column grid.

Of course, we're never done designing, and this layout will continue to get tweaked in the next few weeks. If you see anything you think needs some extra attention, please let us know (support@curbly.com).

And, as always, leave your comments and share your feedback on the new look!

Boulderite: Technorati tags? Can you explain what you mean?

I have to chime in that I also liked the old curbly better (much, much better).  Where are the technocrati tags?

Thanks for the comments, everyone.

- Matthew: good point about the site possibly being confusing to a new user; we lost the banner that used to go across the top of the page explaining what Curbly is, in favor of moving the content closer to the the header.

-  Manzabar: link behaviour could be more consistent, that'll get fixed soon. The Curbly green was nice, but was starting to feel dated to me. Hopefully the new blue will grow on you. We're still missing the favicon too!

The layout is much cleaner, but I have to admit to finding some faults here & there.  I miss the "curbly green" you used to use
in the curbly logo.  The way you handle links across the site is inconsistant and might confuse people:

  • some links change the background color as well as the text color (related and what's hot links to the right of this post)
  • some only change the text color of the link ("username says:" links under recent comments and pressing questions at the bottom of this post).
  • some make no change when hovered over that I can see("more »" links under recent comments and pressing questions at the bottom of this post).

Also some links are underlined and some are not, which could further confuse users.

Tested under Firefox 2.0.0.11 on WinXP.

A step in the wrong direction from my perspective. Elements are not as well demarcated as they once were. I'm less sure what curbly is for as a new user. There are fewer navigational ropes from which I can quick climb my way out of and into different areas of the site. Ultimately, a grid layout is a great thing, but it seems implemented without care for real detail.
