espresso laminate confessions

By bhikkhu

okay, so I screwed up. I started building a platform bed before I had really investigated everything. I planned to have my lumber cut into nice pieces to make it easier to transport and handle. Then I would cover it with a beautiful/modern/trendy espresso veneer, and the seams would be hidden. (I know, veneer makes me a cheapskate, but it's certainly worth the $2,845 I'm saving against the bed I want)

The problem is, I can't find the espresso/black veneer anywhere!!! Does anybody know where one can get something like this? I have seen similiar products ranging from formica to veneer to laminate to "wood film" but I can't find anything that will do the job (in a dark stain).

I am very open to suggestions here... if there were a way to easily wallpaper it in black, I might even give it a shot: anything to make it look like a solid top. And I promise if I get a good suggestion, I'll post all the project pictures!

Thanks in advance for the help!

Treefrog Veneer is exactly what you need!  It's probably where the manufacturer bought it in the first place.  Go to www.treefrogveneer.com you will love it!

Contact a local millwork/custom cabinetry shop. They can create actual veneer out of solid walnut stock, which will stain as you please. (There are probably cheaper hardwoods that will stain darkly.) It won't be super inexpensive, but will last you lifetime if you do it properly.

Unless you used particle board or lumber with a lot of loose knots, you could try faux-painting it to mimic woodgrain.

Keter pointed me in the direction of these lovely laminates: http://alsacorp.com/laminates.htm

*sigh* So shiny!

Also the Giant-soulless-hardware store near me has dark wood effect contact paper. It's quite narrow though, as it's the stuff used to line drawers and the like. Good luck with the bed, I'd love to see how it turns out.
