Drawers to Walls: Earring Frame!

By beccajo

As a jewelry designer, I end up with a LOT of earrings that don't sell. That's fine with me, they end up becoming part of my own accessories wardrobe! But I need a good way to store them that keeps them from getting tangled or lost.

I used to have a chest of drawers with a top pullout section for jewerly, but I really prefer being able to see all my choices at once.

What to do, what to do?!?!?!

Behold-the Earring Frame!

I built this one myself using some trim from a home super store and a mitre box to make the edges meet up, but you could just as well pick up a fancy picture frame at the thrift store.  Make the frame to your desired size by measuring twice and cutting once. My bro was helping me with this task and we cut the second piece the wrong way with the saw so it ended up being like 2 inches less than I had originally wanted. But it still works just fine!

You'll also need a roll of window screen, an old scissors to cut it (it's not that hard to cut but don't use any 'good' sewing scissors) a 12" length of ribbon or rope, a scrap piece of wood that is about 1 inch thick (length is not important), wood or hot glue, and a stapler or staple gun. Just make sure the length of your staples does not exceed that of the depth of the trim. Optional-Paint, more ribbon.

Step 1.

Cut screen to be 1 inch wider on all sides than your frame.

Step 2.

On the back side, staple screen in place, by attaching all across the 'north' side, stretching and then attaching the 'south', then 'east, and finally stretch to remove any more slack for the 'west'.  Trim any excess screen that is hanging over the side. You can hot-glue ribbon over the edge of the screen if you wish.

Step 3.

Attach your ribbon or rope to the 'north' side, 2 inches from the center (so it'll be about 4 inches apart) or whatever measurement looks good with the frame you're using. Trim the ends or let them hang free, it's up to you.

Step 4.

Glue the wood block to the 'south' part of the frame, centered, so it hangs a bit away from the wall. Let dry.

Step 5.

Attach to wall using picture hook or nail! Enjoy!
