My Own Personal Green Acres
By beccajoI'm a bookstore junkie. So much so, that friends know to look for me at our local Barnes and Noble if I'm not answering my phone. My idea of a perfect day is to snuggle up in one of their comfy chairs with a caffiene and sugar laced beverage, and bliss out on home decor magazines and books.
But lately, I've noticed a shift. I've found myself being drawn more frequently to Country Living and Mary Engelbreit, than to British Elle Decor or Metropolitan Home.
I even feel like post-prison, Martha has focused more on the 'country livin'.
Oh and hey take a look at this article in the NYTIMES!
Couple of weeks ago I ordered Amy Butler's Midwest Modern book and I have read it probably 5-6 times. And now, through her, I've discovered Urban Prairie.
And don't forget a poster child for downsizing to a small town Ms Tracy Porter!
Although I am a city gal (gotta have my bookstores!), my grandmother and my parents both live out in the country. I have a great appreciation for the beauty of a slightly run down house with neighbors 1/2 mile away, and a well made, well worn object. But as I get ready to buy my first house, I have to decide; City mouse? Or Country mouse?
Plusses and minus to both abound, but I need to hear from you guys!
Advice?

Yeah...around here we call that 'lottery money musings'! Have you been to Galena, Illinois? It's like Stillwater times a thousand. The whole town is practically on the National Historic Register. Amazing.

i grew up in mahtomedi which is just down the road from stillie, and i LOVE it there. but i think it's a little out of my price range! my friends and i all joke that when we win the lottery, we're all going to move to stillwater.

Hey Beccajo, do you have an area in mind? We constantly ask ourselves this same question too. I love an artsy small town vibe like Stillwater and (to a lesser extent) Excelsior. I think my ideal location is probably only found in the movies, however. *sigh*

well here in the twin cities, you can drive 20 miles from the capital in st. paul and be staring at a dairy farm with a tree farm across the street.
i do know that i want to live close enough to services like grocery stores, bookstores, and libraries that i'm not dependant on my car all the time. driving out to my parent's house and back sucks up almost a 1/4 tank of gas.
and i really enjoy the quiet of the country. the constant noise of cars and trucks is really annoying me on my major street apartment right now.
