Not so Mellow Yellow

By beccajo

I'm not a fan of the color yellow.

It hardly every is listed as someone's favorite color, and if it were a kid on the playground, you know it'd be picked last for kickball teams, EVERY TIME.

Mustard, chartruce, maybe even marigold are OK. But good ol' yellow, ish.

I say this, as I'm actually wearing my official 'Peep Fan Club' t-shirt featuring a big yellow chickie, but it's faded enough that it doesn't bother me.

Where this color aversion stems from, I'll never know. But it's kind of become a joke with me and one of my good friends, he tries to squeek in as much yellow into his set designs as he can, when I'm designing the costumes. One of our last collaborations ended up looking like golf pants. Ugh.

You will never find a yellow shirt or scarf or ANYTHING near one's face, in any of my costume designs. I had to put two actors in yellow kimonos in the last show I did, because they were already in the stock of the theater and really I had no other cheap options, and it just about made me crazy. The one actor was only on stage for one musical number wearing that kimono though, so it was OK. For the other one, I made a huge bag with a red strap that cut across his chest to break it all up, and gave him a nice blue and green hat. Sigh.

What did yellow ever do to me?

To combat my intense hatred/fear/loathing of this color, I've made this inspiriation board to hang in my bedroom, just next to my bed. I figure by process of osmosis, it might cure me of this irrational feeling.

I got a piece of foamcore and covered it with some lovely hand-me-down silk duponi. I used existing mirror clips to hang it, but you could just poke the back of the foam core onto some nails or screws and be good to go. Any time something yellow and pretty (or anything with scripty writing) crosses my path, it goes on the board.

I've lost the name of the artist who did the floral carpet instalation in the upper right, but I love it.  The hankercheif in the middle was hand tatted by one of my great aunts.....and the bird came from the local newspaper.

I'm proud of you for your efforts to combat your aversion to yellow.  I also love the board you made to hang the pictures.  I've been thinking about making something like that.  Thanks for the inspiration.

Yellow's fantastic.  Enthusiasts claim it keeps a brain active, inspires learning and memory.  But it can make babies hyper. O.o
