A Tor(i)d Affair
By beccajoSince finding out about Tord Boontje a few years back, I've been somewhat obsessed with him.
He's created some amazing furniture/accessories, favorites being the Midsummer and Garland lamps. He uses repetitive, stylized shapes layered to the max. My graphic designer friend Timo calls this style 'grunge', but I call it GORGEOUS.
My countless attempts at winning one of these beauties on e-bay have been thwarted by faceless bidders half a world away. So I just about plotzed when I heard he’d be designing for Target. Like a Reese’s PB cup, this collection combines two of my favorite things, the big box retailer who has brought good design to the masses, and my most favorite Dutchman since VanGogh. The spectacular (yet slightly creepy) ads feature music by Goldfrapp......can I come and live in the magical forest with you Tord?
Target’s website has a limited selection right now, but I noticed that their instore displays (the crap hanging just inside the door when you walk in) mimics his Until Dawn cut-tyvek curtains from a few years back. Knowing that Target is notorious for destroying these displays, I’m going to make it my mission to befriend a manager and GET ONE OF THOSE before they throw them out, so wish me luck!
