Like a 3-D Printer for Wood.....the CompuCarve!

By beccajo

Craftsman tools has come out with this nifty machine called a CompuCarve.

Doesn't look like much, right? This thing is an A_MA_ZING woodworking tool.

Design a piece on your computer, or use one of the the hundreds of pre-set designs, and the CompuCarve will go about carving your design in wood, plastic, or high-density foam. It's got a width restriction obviously, but will carve pieces of almost any length. Imagine the fantastic picture frames or folding screens you could create with this baby.

At $1900 plus bits, it's not cheap, but for a dedicated woodworker, this would be an amazing timesaver. Having tried to carve wood for my art minor, I can tell you, it's not an easy task.

Just like the custom embroidery machines that showed up for home sewers about 15 years ago, I could see these being standard in every home woodworking shop in the next 10 years.

I've got to convince the college that they need one of these for the scene shop. Hmmm...
