Wailing, gnashing of teeth

By beccajo

UGH

I left town on Friday for my one-year-old nephew's birthday party, driving to Missouri with my folks, then over to Chicago with my sister, and then took the bus back on Monday. I returned to my apartment which magically was 3 degrees warmer than when I left. Strange, but I suppose it's better than being 30 degrees colder or warmer.

But what struck me as I opened the door, was how much I STILL have left to do. Much to my chagrin, the apartment-organzing-elves had not made an appearance. Boxes need unpacking, drawers need organizing, closets need order, even my kitchen is in disarray. My car is even worse-with stuff that's in transition from storage to the new place, but with no place to put it, it stays in my car!

I'm having a hard time picturing the end product, and maybe that's why I've stalled. That, and I needed to go to bed at 6 PM last night (the bus really didn't offer me any kind of restful sleep, as I had imagined that it would) and so I woke up this AM with the mess still intact..... But I thought I'd at LEAST have wall colors picked, and everything unpacked, by the end of the first month!

Anyway-I guess I need to either plan a party to motivate myself to get'er done, or set a deadline to have all the cardboard OUT of my apartment.

What has worked for you in the past? Can you offer me any encouragement? HELP!

The only 2 things that ever got me fully unpacked in the numerous places I lived was a) imminent out of town guest coming to stay or b) best friend (with serious OCD) flew in to save me and mowed those boxes down.  Planning a party sounds like the right external motivation.

Good luck.  I'll be in your shoes in May - need to go book my best friend's plane ticket...

If you have lots of cardboard boxes, put them up on freecycle. People are ALWAYS asking for them on my local freecycle.
