Great Wall of the North

By beccajo

Alrighty folks-please try to look past the crappy photoshopping, and let me know what you think is the best/cheapest solution.

In my new apartment, I need storage. Bigtime. I would also like to keep as much floor space as possible open, as I only have 512 sq feet to begin with, and I still need to get a sleeper sofa or daybed in here. Oy.

Here are four options for adding storage to my space. Keep in mind, I can't touch the ceiling or the brick walls, nor bolt anything to the floor. Next, we decide on paint colors!!!

First idea comes from Ed. He's an architect, if you couldn't tell. Here is his solution. Stepped up sets of drawers and bookcases, so it would scale back from the floor. You can't see it in the photo, but there's a wall switch on that half-wall that separates the kitchen from the 'main' room.

I think if I did this, it would be easy to just buy these things from IKEA or PBteen or something.

Next up: My dad's idea. Big wooden boxes, made from different funky materials, that would act as large display frames in a way. He calls it 'Wine Cubbies', I call it eclectic and cool but maybe a little hard to access without a ladder. In my drawing, they don't share common sides, but there's no reason why they couldn't.

Third-my mom and brother's solution-building a lofted space and using columns from a building supply store or salvage place to keep it from falling down.

My problem with this would be that it would take up a lot of floor space, and only be able to be connected on the two sides. It would also require a lot of materials to purchase.

Lastly-the cheapest, and maybe least stylish choice, a bookcase premade from IKEA.

Depending on the wall color, I might be tempted to get the black one to match my TV stand. Or I might just cover the back panels with funky paper.

Alright Curbly community.....what do you think? If you want to propose your own idea, here's the 'blank' wall jpg that I used. There's a wall that's about 8 feet high, and it's a 14 foot ceiling and a 14 foot long wall.

actually, nothing yet! it's still a mess 'o boxes. although i love ed's idea, i think it might end up being the IKEA shelves, for affordability, ease of assembly, and small footprint. we'll see though......

I know this comment comes a week later, but did you come up with a solution yet? Although the IKEA shelf is "the least stylish" it would have my vote because I *LOVE* mine. And I wish that I had the space above it like you do to hange really super huge pictures, fabric panels, whatever. The shelf is easy to put together and easy to keep organized, has amazing lighting effects possible, and it will go with you to another home, where the floating boxes would be much more effort. (Gosh, when did I get so lazy???) Anyway, What did you decide?

#2, the floating boxes, is aesthetically coolest, but for function, i would probably attempt a combination of either #1 and #3 or #2 and #3 -- having a loft top off the stepped bookcase or floating boxes seems feasible.

well folks, we have a new contender.....These would take up floor space (unless I wall-mounted them) and would require some DIY....but I'd be guaranteed to have the only ones on the block!

i personally like #2 with the wooden boxes, but if it were me, i'd tweak it a bit to my own tastes.  i'm just a big fan of stuff that looks like it 'floats' on a wall

I'm with Chris--Ed the architect wins. It's nice to have a variety of storage options (drawers and cubbies, etc) and with his idea you'd have it. Also, there's no where to hide anything with the other choices. It's always good to have a place to keep that not-for-public-viewing stuff, if you know what I mean ;)
