In the Arts and Crafts style

The Arts and Crafts movement began in Great Britain the 1880s as a general backlash against 2 things: ornate Victorian furniture and the Industrial Revolution. The movement affected both interior design and architecture

The Arts & Crafts movement focused on simplicity, natural materials, good quality craftsmanship, and art for the people. It was meant as a way to bring good design to the masses.

The term Arts and Crafts tends to refer to the European movement, while Craftsman or Mission refers to the American movement.  The term Craftsman comes from Gustav Stickley, who promoted his furniture in his magazine, The Craftsman. Mission comes from the influence of Southwestern furnishings and interiors in this style.

Although this style was born so long ago, it still endures- go into any mass market retailer like Target and you will see plenty of "Mission" style furniture. Why is this style still so popular today?  It is easy to build, the simplicity is lovely, and it is practical.

Elements of Arts & Crafts / Mission also blend nicely with both oriental and modernist decor.  Frank Lloyd Wright's designs clearly demonstrate this flexibility.

For people interested in reading more about Arts & Crafts, Craftsman and Mission styles; I'd recommend picking up a copy of American Bungalow magazine.
