It helps to hang out with old people...
By badbadivy...especially if they're stylish old people. When my grandmother consolidated her belongings and moved to Tennessee, my dad gave me her old craftsman buffet and matching round table. I didn't know anything about it- it had been sitting in her dining room since forever, and had been piled with all the things grandmas tend to leave piled around- old magazines, bills, newspapers- you name it, my grandma had it piled on this buffet and table. When I got it home, I realized the simple beauty of these pieces and did some research.

The style is called craftsman (also known as "arts and crafts" or "mission"), easily recognizable with the quartersawn oak and simple design. Now, I would have never been able to afford furniture this nice on my own. That's why I am so lucky to have inherited it.
One good place to start when looking for furniture is your own family. Many times when your parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, or cousins downsize, they want to keep their furniture in the family and will gladly give you their furniture or sell it to you, cheaply.
Let's hear it from the peanut gallery: have you scored any fabulous furniture from your family?
