When your home really is your castle

By badbadivy

This weekend I went to the Tennessee Renaissance Festival. On the site of the festival is a real castle, built by its owner, photographer Mike Freeman. He first conceived of the castle when he was in high school in 1970. He started the first tower in 1980, and today the castle is a marvel. It is still a work in progress, but the progress is amazing.

Castle Gwynn is based on a 12th century Welsh castle design and currently has two towers. Eventually, it will have four.

This is the front side of the castle. Its appearance has changed quite a bit since I first saw it in 1993. The state of Tennessee put a highway in quite close to the castle, and the castle was damaged. However, the castle still stands strong and beautiful.

Two years worth of work, 14,000 bricks and 60 arches make up thisspectacular kitchen.

The intricate ceiling of the open-air Great Hall.

I think it's going to be the roof of one of the towers.

The outside garden.

All photos taken by me. Some information in this post found in this article.
