Rag rug love!

By badbadivy

I love rag rugs. Maybe it's my Hoosier upbringing, but rag rugs speak to me of home. You can use them just about anywhere and they're cheap as heck. You can also throw them in the washingmachine and wash them when they get dirty. Yep, rag rugs are the shizzy.

So, imagine my joy when I ran across this website with step-by-step instructions with photos on how to make your own rag rugs! The instructions are great, and you don't even need any special tools.

There is also instructions for making rugs out of recycled plastic bags, if you have a loom. I wonder if you can make the rag rug above out of plastic bags. Hmmm.

Rugs-

July 13, 2007

I think is about the most exciting thing I have seen in a long time. I am always wondering what to do with my plastic bags…although I actually have found other uses for them. Did you know that you can fold a plastic bag just like you would fold an American flag? And when you have a large amount of them you can use special glue and wires to hold them together and turn them into items like chairs??? I know that sounds weird…it works the same with paper bags and corrugated cardboard as well. I’m really excited that you posted the link to that web site. I love rag rugs myself and like to keep them around for everything. What colors would you recommend to make a truly stunning and one of a kind rag rug? Do you think it would be possible for you to do a post and maybe show some of your own creations (if you’ve happened to get on the train already) to give the rest of us out here a little inspiration?  But you can also get good rag rugs at http://www.factoryfast.com.au, if yo're interested in buying something now.

Just a note, 20+ years ago I was crocheting items from plastic bags. At the time, I was snagging everyone's Wonder bread wrappers to make rugs, rain hats and all sorts of funky stuff.

Start at the open end and cut plastic into a continuous one inch strip (Like peeling an apple in one strip). Tie them together and start creating. One thing I did do is VERY lightly is to rub my crochet hook with baby oil so the plastic bag would slide on the hook.

This works for looms and knitting needles also. So yes, you can braid with plastic bags. It just takes a ton of them to make something with! Have fun recycling!
