amusing idea

By atrophie

so in my last post, i wrote about trying to make a magnetic strip to stick metal hygeine tools on.  well, i came up with a better and simpler idea.

my medicine cabinet is some sort of metal that's painted over with white.  the mirrored door on it is a couple inches wider than the actual cabinet on three sides.  i stuck some neodymium magnets on the bottom of the cabinet, and now i've got hidden but organized tools!

for some reason, this solution really amuses me.  it's perfect!

and i've replaced my ugly brass cabinet hardware with the bar pulls:

you can see just how ghetto my apartment is when you look at the second cabinet from the bottom.  the holes for the hardware are not centered.  mhmm.

so much better, don't you agree?  the real trick was using this metal leaf wax in silver and pewter to change the hinges from brass to steel-looking.  i've used it before because it's really awesome...just rub your finger in it like a lip gloss pot and rub it onto the desired surface.  i bought some brass coloured kind too so i can change the hinges back to brass when i move out (otherwise i think you can use turpentine).  i was trying to figure out what to do about the mismatching hinges, and while talking over the phone, my mom suggested i use the wax (mom knows best!).

i haven't done much with my bathroom except continue to scrape off old grout, caulk, and adhesive from the shower doors.  it's amazing what a difference a shower curtain makes.  i finally bought new grout, a floater, and cheesecloth so i'll regrout soon (haha i keep saying that)...it's just hard to find time when my boyfriend needs to use the shower every day.

that's about it for now!

Nice work! I love the hidden magnets thing, and balu's right, those new handles make a world of difference.

Whow, the new handles make it look a lot more modern. I like them.
