I am having trouble finding toy storage for my son

By animred

I am having trouble finding cheap toy storage for my son.  As you can see his room is not that big and is overan with toys.  With CHristmas coming up I have no idea where new toys will go.  Anyone have any ideas how to correct this?

thanks to all that have posted and the great ideas and comments that i have received.  I appreciate it all.  I am realy excited at all the feedback that I have received.  I think that we are going to go through toys and books again and see what we can weed out ( I did that a year ago when I moved to Kansas City and a year went too quickly), and i am going to invest in the wall hanging storage and some taller bookcases, maybe framing in his bed against the walls, putting toys into clear plastic bins, then come spring garage sale :) or salvation army which ever comes first.  Thanks once again everyone.

I agree with some of the other posters - you don't have to keep everything for ever! Get your son involved and divide his toys into three piles. Stuff he wants, stuff to go 'into the attic' (or wherever you store things, but well out of sight) and rubbish. You will be surprised at how many containers have little more than a silt of bits of broken plastic, lost jigsaw pieces and dead felt pens. The rubbish goes out immediately. The storable stuff gets put into boxes and put away, and the rest can be stored in the containers that other posters have recommended. After 12 months or so go through the stored stuff to see if there is anything you want to keep for posterity and quietly get rid of the rest. If you are brave you can sort it again with your son, chances are he will have grown out of them and will be willing to let them go. We always had a big sort out before Christmas when there is more enthusiasm for creating space!

Hmmmm.  I've struggled with this over the years, and here is what I have concluded:

  1. The kids will get older...so establish a storage system that is not too cutsie
  2. Avoid dust-collectors - better to use bins in a bookcase.  It not only hides the toys from view, but keeps them cleaner.
  3. Because toys cause enough clutter, avoid a mix of storage units.
  4. As always - less is more.  Why not store some toys in the attic for a couple months, then reintroduce them later!  Keeps it fresh.

Conclusion...get some simple bookcases (secure them to the walls!) and get some inexpensive bins to slide in.  Check dollar stores, or Target has some nice cloth ones for about $7 each...they're actually pretty sturdy.  For the bookcases, try Home Depot...they have some great deals at times.    Good luck!

We use the Ikea storage boxes. Very useful for things like LEGO, and toy cars. We've also got one of those nets, hung on the back of the door and filled with stuffed toys. The other general rule we have is that we go to a car boot sale* at least twice a year. We get the kids (two boys) to go through all their stuff and choose what they don't want any more, then we go to the sale. A pitch is very cheap, and we let the boys share out their takings at the end of the day. The sadness of parting with once-loved toys is tempered by the fact they get pocket money, which they can use to buy new toys! It also teaches them the value of money, and haggling etc. - all good life skills. They are aged 8 and 6. The sale also gives us the opportunity to get rid of old stuff we don't want from the house. :) * Look it up on Wikipedia if you're not sure what that is
