And now...back to our regular programming

By amorcitos Laundry-tempkitchen_medium

Geez, it has been a looong time since my last post here. Why do things like work have to get in the way of progress on a reno project? In the last 9 months my job has taken me to Latin America (4x), Africa (2x) and Asia  (once). While I love seeing the world, it is good to be home. But it's been hard to be of any real help to my hubby, whose job it is to head up our kitchen reno. Still, he's been able to get us from here to here: We're pretty happy with the results in... »MORE

Bouncy Man dinner...Coming right up

By amorcitos P3040326_large

What do Bounce sheets and Hungry Man dinners have in common? Well, at our place, they'll be sharing a home in just a few days. Which means the laundry room's almost done. For us, this is leaps forward following IKEA-induced stagnation (of the kichen kind). By this time next week, we'll be committed. And the Hubs will be snowboarding with our spring-breakin' nephew. And then I'll be out of the country. This intermittent availability, between the two of us, is beginning to get on my nerves. But I digress. (This is Curbly, not my shrink's couch.) As laundry rooms go, this... »MORE

Mine, all mine

By amorcitos Mypitcher_large

Okay, I'm done now. I'm done buying Russel Wright dishes...for the time being, anyway. The latest addition (choirs of angels singing). Ain't she purty? Soon to be best friends with our new covered ramekin and veggie bowl. These pieces are a lot bigger than they look...the pitcher's about 12" tall with a 7 or 8" base. The ramekin and veggie bowl were both pretty stout, too. Works well for a family-style dinner or a dressed-up table with an unpretentious feel. If you're looking for RW stuff, eBay has tons of it, usually more affordable than specialized RW sellers. It just takes looking... »MORE

Blogging a reno thru the rear-view window

By amorcitos Loeb-udontknowme-curbly_medium

Geez, this is hard. Blogging parts of our renovation in retrospect is quite a challenge. But I wanted to pull out highlights and share them--partly for posterity, partly for my sanity. (Possibly related, as I'm terrible at recording things that affect our future, and then I later regret not having done it.) Anyway, lots happened in the first week or so after we closed on the house last April. So I uploaded some stuff to flickr (which doesn't seem to agree w/my sequencing efforts) to record those events. There's some DIY stuff here (which I'll do better at recording in... »MORE

Clean slate, I say!

By amorcitos Lr-northview_large

This is what we started with last April when we bought our 50s rancher. We closed a week after I tore my ACL, so my lovely husband got to spend the next several weeks doing all the moving and nursing me post-surgery. We'd rather forget about those few weeks. ;) Now that we're both able-bodied, it's kind of fun to take a look at what we bought nearly a year ago (yikes). But now we can (both of us) do something about it. If you're interested, here's the Before. And a little After, left. Well, kind of. It's a work... »MORE

I think I'm in love: Russel Wright

By amorcitos Russelwright_1

If you're a married man, you know what being a "dead man" feels like. But Russel Wright is, literally, a dead man. And no, I'm not a pervert. It's his work I love. My husband (a non-corpse, thank God) and I went to a modernism auction in Denver last month, and just for kicks I bid on a set of Russel Wright dishes. Kind of hodge-podge, but I didn't care. All I really wanted was to try my hand at an auction. Totally by accident, we fell in love. And now we're hooked. In fact, I've been adding pieces ever... »MORE

Reno on a '50s rancher: How long is too long?

By amorcitos Loeb-udontknowme-curbly_medium

My grandmother could've told me that remodels always take at least twice (maybe four times) as long as one plans, and I still wouldn't have believed it. Heh. Our timeline was, oh, sometime in October for completing our kitchen renovation. It's nearly Christmas, and we haven't even begun. <kermit the frog>Ho hum. In his defense (not naming names), we ended up with lots of dependencies, and that actually was a good thing (till tonight...read Ikea note below). The only thing driving our timeline was throwing (we hoped) a holiday party. And frankly, that's just not good enough when you're spending... »MORE
