Mantels are overrated: How should I display holiday cards?

By alicia

Despite the lack of snow in St. Paul, I am getting in the holiday spirit. I've been listening to Dean Martin's "Marshmallow World" and started to make my way down my holiday gift lists. I turned my car stereo to the "Christmas Superstation" where it's Christmas all day and all night. Sweet Bruno deals with my holiday spirit magnificently.

We received our first holiday card this weekend, which brings me to my question: Does anyone have a non-traditional way to display holiday cards? Last year we used the predictable piano, and this year we're looking for something a bit more creative. Happy holidays!

"Marshmallow World" may be the greatest Christmas song of all time!  Right up there with "Mele Kalikimaka"

I just stick them on our Christmas tree since we don't have tons of decorations on it.  Fast and easy and keeps the cards off the mantle or table.

So here's the thing... I don't display them.  Not because I don't love getting personalized mail that doesn't demand payment or something equally disappointing, but rather due to the fact that my Holiday Cards remain in the box, unsigned, un-addressed and likely to there to remain until next year's purge.

That said.  I've always wanted to get a huge lovely ribbon and hang it with some fabulous bow  to display these cards on the wall.  I'd likely staple them on from the inside and hang them vertically so that they still open.  Fantastic!

There's also, making your own holiday card holder thingie.  The old foam core wrapped in fabric (or wrapping paper), criss-crossed in festive ribbon with buttons at the x's for strength.  Tuck cards between.  That would be nice also, I think.

Well, I have a two story home so I have a large wrap around bannister that I hang a garland on.  Instead of using bulbs to decorate along with my lights I use a hole punch in the upper left hand corner and use a piece of red or green ribborn to tie it to the garland.  It is pretty, practical and I notice people pause along the stairs to read them.

If you don't have stairs you might try hanging a garland around your front door, and interrior arch way or along a sofa table and using the same concept.

Aww, I like to see my holiday cards, especially from people I'm close with. We have a mantel this year so I'm using it, but in the past I've seen people make little wreaths out of them and I think that's cute. They're holiday cards, they're never going to be cool. So they might as well be cute.

I've always displayed mine in the trash.
