Radon, the other silent killer

By alexrussell

It kills 20,000 people every year, and is the second leading cause of lung cancer in America. It's radon, and you may be breathing it every day and never know it.

Radon is a natural radioactive gas that you can't see, taste or smell. The worst part about it is that if you're breathing it, you're probably breathing it in your very own house. It comes up from the ground through your foundation, even if it's poured concrete.

The good news is that there are plenty of home testing kits to see if you've got a radon problem. There's one that sells for $20 at Target.

If it turns out you do have a radon problem, you may need to call a pro. Of course, if you have a hammer drill, plumbing, and electrical skills, you can buy the mitigation materials and do the work yourself. There's never much wrong with saving a few bucks.

I've been meaning to check into this and do some basic tests. Thanks for the reminder!  I know nothing.
