I'm a construction professional and freelance writer--a knucklehead with a brain. My sense of style is utilitarian, but I'm working on that. I live in an apartment at the moment but hope one day to buy a run-down house and turn it into my dream home.

Save tons of money on paint, if the color doesn't really mattter

By alexrussell Paint_large

Have a closet or garage that needs a coat of paint, but you don't want to shell out the $20 for it? There's a couple easy ways to find paint for pennies on the dollar, and they're closer than you might think. The first place to look is the same place you'd go to pay full price. Any paint store will have cans of paint leftover from mistakes in the mixing process. When a customer comes in with a swatch of fabric or a flower petal to get a match, and he's not happy with the end result, the store has to eat... »MORE

Help your new plumbing pay for itself

By alexrussell Old_copper_large

The price of copper has skyrocketed, and it's not an all bad thing. There are great alternatives to copper when it comes to re-piping your home, so there's no real need to pay any premiums there. But why not take advantage with the old copper pipe you're going to replace? Scrap metal recyclers in Seattle, where I am, are paying upwards of $1.75 or so per pound for scrap copper. Thanks for your comment! Max isn't going to be around much longer - in his head and heart he's still a puppy but his body's starting to fail him, but he's been a most precious companion for many years.

We haven't been in and working on the house long enough to do more than some basic cosmetic upgrades and some necessary fixes and preventative things, and we still have to focus on lower-budget cosmetic stuff until we get past the higher budget things that are next on the list, including basement water problems and something to replace this blasted electric baseboard heat!! But I'm planning on taking some classes in doing custom trimwork, then later some classes in custom cabinetry, and that's when the real "retrovation" will begin.  In the mean time I'm doing all the research I can to find out what would be appropriate for this house, and trying desperately to find a previous owner/occupant who is willing to talk with me about what they remember about the house's design, layout and features.

Thanks for your interest!
