Playing with glass beads in a table lamp

By Whamodyne

I've been playing around lately with large glass beads in a table lamp.  I'm working on putting them into a glass block with a 100W compact florescent light and seeing how that looks.  Here's the test case with a cut down 2 liter bottle.

The 2 liter took just under 5lb of the beads.  I think a glass block will be just about the same.  I like the idea of using the beads as a diffuser instead of a shade - I think it brings a much more interesting play of the light and draws the eye.  I'm not a huge fan of "pretty" lights that are nice and decorative but you can't read a book by them.  This sucker looks to do both, be pretty and able to be read by.     I'll post more photos as I make progress on this project.

Hey, how did it work out? That's an awesome idea!

The beads touch the bulb and I made sure to put some inside the bulb as well.  The beads should be able to take the heat fairly well, but if there is one with an air bubble inside it could get interesting.   I plan on running the final result for 24 hours in a corner of the garage to see if anything funky happens before putting it in the living room.

love it!  Do the beads touch the light bulb or do you have another container inside?
