Hi!  I'm Ray Alderman and I'm in Central Virginia.  I'm a hobbyist hacker of things.   I've usually had a day job that was on the phone talking to people and at the end of the day, wanted to do something with my hands and create stuff.  Dabbling in electronics, robotics, welding, woodworking and design.  Design wise I love the classic lines and simplicity of the Arts & Crafts movement, but like using more industrial materials like steel, concrete, copper pipe and plywood.

Playing with glass beads in a table lamp

By Whamodyne

I've been playing around lately with large glass beads in a table lamp.  I'm working on putting them into a glass block with a 100W compact florescent light and seeing how that looks.  Here's the test case with a cut down 2 liter bottle.

The 2 liter took just under 5lb of the beads.  I think a glass block will be just about the same.  I like the idea of using the beads as a diffuser instead of a shade - I think it brings a much more interest » READ MORE

It should be a how-to post automatically.  We'll fix Curbly to make that happen for you.  Nice entry!

Ben,

Heh.  Does the system throw out a warning that someone is uploading a bunch of pictures and sucking up server space?  I was worried I would hit a post limit at any point.  I posted it into the contest entries and it seems to have been a regular blog post as well - any way we can cross post into how-tos?  Doesn't seem to show up there.

Hi Whamodyne, you've got really great pictures of your work and the whole process. Are you going to put 'em in a blog post?  I'd love to see the story behind your work.  Looks very cool.

Thanks for the comment.  I'm cutting/grinding steel tubing for a computer cart I was welding together.  My second attempt at welding up some furniture.  That picture is my old shop area (enclosed porch) from my Chicago days.  It's amazing what you can pack into a 8' x 10' space.
