While I personally luv Modern, and am even lucky enough to have a couple pieces of it, it remains a design element that's almost exclusively available only to the very well-to-do, leaving it out of the reach of most of your average houshold budgets. It's one of the major reasons that stores that sell cheap-o versions of it, like Ikea, sell as much to the general public as they do. I think tons of people really like and want clean and visually pleasing lines. Ikea is a way they can afford a semblance of that.
I don't think any design element should be out of the reach of average Joes & Janes, but far too often designers aren't designing for "you and me." It's really ridiculous how expensive some of the most basic & simplistic designs are. I've got no problem appreciating good design and great materials, but just because you can get that much for your 2 liter plastic bottle bottoms "chandelier" doesn't mean it's worth that much. PT Barmum said it best .....
