Turning Pants into a Purse -- Plus, Winnie from the Wonder Years...

By SustainableSuppers

I should be packing right now, as we leave for John Denver country in just a few hours, but I decided it would be much more fun to talk to you. (I'll be researching restaurants for my upcoming grassfed/organic travel guide, Sustainable Suppers on the Road. I love jobs where you get to eat!)

Also. I wanted to tell you about this purse:

I made it from a pair of pants that finally quit on me after five years.  Here's the scoop:

What to do with Cherry Pits!

By SustainableSuppers

created at: 2009-08-24

Hiya!

I'm piggybacking a bit here on Chrisjob's fantastic Cherry Jubilee Week posts.  They've been fantastic.

Once you're done preparing your cherries for all of those scrumptious creations, what can you do with the pits?  Plenty, it turns out.

You can doctor your vinegar into something gourmet.

You can make a heating pad.

You can make cherry hooch!

Ciao!

Scrap Nettle - Beauty Secrets from Your Backyard

By SustainableSuppers

created at: 2009-08-07

Poor stinging nettles: they need a new P.R. person.

Yes, their stingers can cause welts and allergic reactions if you touch them with your bare hands, but once you subdue a nettle plant's young, tender leaves, you behold myriad possibilities for nourishment: teas, soups, pesto, sautés, you name it.

Nettles are also big beauty boosters, because they aid your kidneys and liver: you can add some to your next facial steam, infuse them into vi » READ MORE

Can't farm? No problem! Grow Sprouts! (Protein for Pennies...)

By SustainableSuppers

created at: 2009-07-10

I can't grow herbs in my apartment: the light's too poor.  And if I were to put them out on the balcony, the ocean air from that fanny parade known as South Beach would burn the little suckers.

I'm not about to stick a log in my shoe closet to grow mushrooms.  Who needs fungus in there?

And I have no land.  So my Jeffersonian dream of growing at least some of my own food seemed long squelched.

Until.

I realized I could grow sprouts.   » READ MORE

Refashioning! Turning Shirts into Chair Cushions!

By SustainableSuppers

created at: 2009-06-22

Buttercup,

A new pastime has gripped my weekends for some months now: refashioning, wherein one turns thrifted clothes, or those forgotten shirts and dresses apologetically peeking out from the back of the closet, into new outfits or household decor.  It’s a superb hobby: eco-friendly, creative and stress relieving.

Oh, and it rewards and encourages frugality, which we love.

Green DIY Biz Cards

By SustainableSuppers

Green DIY biz cardsHiya!

Just uploaded a post on turning junk mail and old holiday cards into business cards.

http://www.sustainablesuppers.com/bizcard/

The Big Corporate Behemoth under whose employ I once toiled used to take care of that whole networking/printing shazam.  But this week, after RSVPing to an alumni function, I was seized by the fact that, yes, Virginia, (a more mundane state) I needed business cards.

Except.  I’m someone who turns apple » READ MORE

Reusing Wine Bottles - Wine Lamp

By SustainableSuppers

created at: 2009-05-12The hubby and I like to imbibe from time to time, and we usually recycle our bottles.  But every once in a while, we figure out a nifty way to reuse them: sometimes we use an empty bottle make salmeura, gleaning from a recipe in Shannon Hayes's superb grass-fed meats cookbook The Grassfed Gourmet.  Other times, we save a few bottles in the hopes that we'll find some obliging dandelions to pluck and turn into our own house vintage.
