Help me solve a mystery

By Sijbrich

My husband and I are in Italy for about 3 months.  We have a great apartment, but we are both a little mystified by these things that are in both showers.  It looks like some sort of emergency device, given the red tab and all, but other than that, we have no idea what it could be for.  Can anyone enlighten us?

No, it's an apartment that actually part of a house.  I would consider it a comfortable middle class apartment, nothing super fancy.  Perhaps it's a new thing they're doing here.

I was routing for clothes line.  I had an apartment in Vicenza, Italy and I didn't have an emergency call pull.  Is this a luxury apartment  bldg or maybe a new feature in Italy.

Well, folks.  The mystery has been solved.  Your ideas really helped, though.  I went back to check if it could be a clothesline, but there wasn't anything to attach it to on the other side.  So I got brave and did what Balubalu suggested and just pulled it to see what would happen.  It made a very loud buzzing noise.  So it's an emergency buzzer. My husband came home from work and told me that one of his coworkers just told him about it today, too.

Although I think it would make a great clothesline, too.  I really like that idea, and very logical being right over the bathtub and all...

Thanks again for your detective work!:-)

I agree with erika, it looks like a clothesline to me, and with it being in the shower, it makes sense. Drip dry over drain. :)

I bet its a clothes line. Is there a place on the opposite wall for which to place the red part?

It's easy to find out you know - just pull the string :o).

In fact those could have a lot of functions:

  • switch the light
  • switch a vent
  • emergency alarm
  • bell to call the butler
Isn't there a chance to ask the homeowner or something?
