Wanted: Ideas for this Little Guy

By Shari

created at: 2009-05-27

OK, I love this shape, and I've been collecting these little plastic bottles for a while, waiting to get an idea of what I can do with them. But I haven't come up with anything yet. Maybe Somebody out in cyberspace can help?

I was thinking of something functional, and not just decorative. Something to hang clothes or towels on? A light fixture? Some idea that utilizes the hole? There must be SOMETHING.

Awe,

I saw that bottle and thought about putting a light with a plug (like the ones that go in Christmas houses).  You could use a colored Christmas light in the socket instead of a white one.  The light would color the glass and show through the inside at the same time.  Hang it upside down, and fill with dried or silk flowers that look as though they are growing out of it.  I hope you can visualize my idea.

I would love a dozen of these.  How cool are they!

ooooh  I love it !   How many do you have?

They would be funky cartooned into a choir group to plant kitchen herbs into. You could paint them differnt colors and add noses and paint or glue on eyes, paint or glue on features like eyebrows and ears..then line them up in staggerd rows to sing...LOL.

If they end up being too opaque for the garden lights try cutting or punching them with holes to let the light out.

Seriously fun little bottles and of course it just begs the question: What country do you live in...??

You are very welcome Shari. I have a bunch of med supplies from when I had to have IVs at home that I plan on making into garden lights for our daughter. She's a lab tech in the Air Force. She thought It was a great idea. I'm glad I saw this or I would have forgotten about making those for her.

I hate throwing things away if there's a use for them it's nice to see so many others are thinking that way now too.

The bottles come from a probiotic yoplait drink, that is available where I live (not in the US).

I like the garden lights idea, I take a pic whne I give it a try. Thanks DesigningMom!

I don't know what I'd do with them, but where did you get them? I want some!

I just thought of a couple possibilities.

1. Purchase PVC pipe in a size to fit snuggly inside the tops of the bottle and a length of rope small enough to fit through the holes in the bottle. Cut PVC in 6 to 8 inches sections gluing those into each bottle. Pound PVC into ground around flower bed with holes in the bottles facing each other. Run rope through these hole to make a Garden border.

2. Purchase a string of garden (like Christmas miniture lights). Cut notch on two sides of bottle rim. Tuck one bulb inside light just enough so the tip almost touches the upper part of the hole. Secure wire into the notches on either side of the opening. Continue this with each light and you'll have a unique string of garden lighting.

Can you tell us what came in them? Just curious, but who knows that could help something click. Or we could buy some and play around with them to help get an idea.

I'm afraid they're way too small to be used as a vase - about 3" high. (so there's no chance of fitting a lightbulb in either)

Hmmm...that's a tough one.  Maybe sparypaint them & use as vases?  Sorry - not too original :)

If light shines through the material well, a few of these could be used to make a really cool light fixture or arrangement of fixtures. (Roughly has seen here: http://www.curbly.com/DIY-Maven/posts/4650-how-to-turn-vintage-mason-jars-into-a-light-fixture). Painted or plain, they might make for cool vases, as well.
