My Firstest Ever Video Attempt

By Senseless 2147225947_2379fc7873

I managed to solder a microphone pigtail to the circuit board of an DXG-506V without breaking it although I'm pretty certain I broke the Warranty and made a first attempt at a You Tuber video my editing lacks and I had to do it all in one serious of shots so I left my flubbed lines in to prove I'm still Alive... I realize this goes on and on and I need to edit it down to about 5 minutes but as I said it's a first attempt. PS This was suposed to have a poll but I can's see how... »MORE

Homeland Security!

By Senseless 453337996_471e556a6d

So I get a couple hits from Homeland and I figure its just someone browsing on thier lunch break no big deal and I just go about my business with my landscaping project of filling in all the low spots in the yard cause it is after all spring. Just cause I'm getting the fill dirt from under the house shouldn't be a concern I would think. I made the crawl space under their four foot high so I could get to all my plumbing without crawling around and I was thinking of how expensive a truckload of fill is... »MORE

Gadgets

By Senseless Insulation_cutter_large

When I was insulating the house I used rolled insulation and wanted to get all my edges tight.  I had so many pieces to cut that I took a couple minutes and used a pair of hinges and some scrap wood to make a jig to guide the razor and compress the insulation as I cut.   You can cut it clean in a single cut and it seems to work better with the paper side down.  »MORE

Digging Holes Deeper than a Regular Posthole Digger Digs

By Senseless 415995558_291df781a2

I was messing around in the yard and thinking about bunkers and shifting sands and my three inch trashpump and portland cement and grout under preasure and if I dug a bunch of ten foot holes around the perimter to stiffen things up a bit and then it hit me I needed a bit and I crawled into the crawlspace and retrieved a length of 4 inch steel pipe I once tried to dig a well with and a piece of soapstone and the chop saw and then after a bit I had a bit.  It works well better than... »MORE

Bat's in my Belfry

By Senseless 406288985_1b141e9dd5

Once upon a day's end nearly while I wondered worn out dreary, I chanced upon a sound so faint... Oh Nevermind. One of my Minions used the bat entrance in the woodburner which I wasn't using fortunately at the time though the time was late and I may have and could have but I was just tinkering in the dungeon thinking about submarines and bunkers and electric airboats and sorting through boxes of stuff and heard a noise and I know all the house noises this wasn't one of them. I suspected a rat. Then I wondered if the cat... »MORE

How to Wash a Cat

By Senseless 351153958_ee35c8bcfc_o_large

Save a trip to the groomers and train your cat to get in the tub!My cats tend to spend as much time outside as they do inside and being in a somewhat rural area they can run into fleas and in general be kind of dusty so I wash them when I wash the dogs.  You have to start when they are kittens and aways use warm water and slow movements and keep the adrenyline in you low since cats sense that kid of thing and they will comply if you have the patience.     »MORE

Plan Ahead

By Senseless Wireless

It doesn't hurt to have a few quirky personal touches!  At least I don't think so...Since building your house yourself takes a lot of time but not necesarily my full attention, I end up daydreaming about things that you might not normally do in house like run compressed airlines to each floor. This might seem a waste of time but it was simple when the house was just framed in and I don't have to drag an aircompressor around or have a mile of lines snaking through the house.   I also added a water spicket on the top floor in case of fire. ... »MORE

Bracing up for Windloads

By Senseless 141649840_2c1b6c3c84_o_large

Since I live about 30 mles form the Gulf in Florida I'm used to the accasional bout of bad weather and I really hate to evacuate.  I built the house into a hill, which is hard to find in Florida, so I have a level that is underground on three sides and that by itself makes for a pretty safe place to hunker down as Jeb likes to put it.  The walls are concrete block filled with rebar and concrete, and I glued and nailed plywood to the ceiling before I hung the sheetrock.  The floors above it are 3/4... »MORE

Warm Toes!

By Senseless 90041871_81cef8417b_o

I've had an aversion to cold ever since I got lost in the Mountains of Pennsylvania in a snowstorm for 23 hours. That probobly explains why I live in Florida. The floor in the Master Bath has electric heating elements embedded below the tiles and it wasn't that hard to do.  I got a system that uses a long loop of wire but they also make some in matts which I suppose might be easier to layout if your room is fairly square. The master bath has a sunken shower that I made with a sheet of heavy rubber.  I used backer board on... »MORE

Hide the Trash Can

By Senseless 323824882_56b08f7e98_o_large

I bought all the kitchen cabinets for the house I just finished a few years ago and basically forgot the exact layout.  I sat in the kitchen for some time and treated it like a logic puzzle, the sink and stove were roughed in so they served as reference points and from there I could figure out where everything went except for two long doors that didn't fit anything. I seldom throw things away being a mega might need it someday packrat, and I was doubtful about returning them for a store credit after so much time had gone by so... »MORE

Seven Years of DIY

By Senseless Foyer_big_large

Building a house is just like adding an addition, it just takes longer... I designed this house and did most of the construction myself and paid for the bulk of it by buying and remodeling then selling a few other smaller houses. It took me about 5 months to frame it and get the roof on and then I rolled a truck and crushed my head which slowed me down a bit but I just finished it to the point I could get moved in. I probobly have a month of doing mouldings and stuff then I plan on taking a longnap.  http://senseless.livejournal.com/214511.html »MORE
