Before The Cleanup

By RustIndy

This is just a sample of the horrendous mess I live in every day. The desk is way too large and is in a poor working place, the workout equipment is crowded by clutter, and the music stuff is scattered from one end to the other.

So why am I not cleaning it up? Because it's time to completely rearrange the place! I hate it, I hate it, I hate it! Too much stuff, too little space.

I need help finding an arrangement that lets these two adjoined rooms contain four seperate functions: work, play (music), excercise, and read. Where should the desk be? Should I replace it with something smaller with storage space? Should the work area and gym area swap places? Can I get rid of that big, honkin' entertainment unit? Should I?

ARG! Help, please, anyone!

Thank you!

hmm the pic seems to be missing, but some things I've found useful..

a book called 'clearing your clutter with feng shui', which actually had little to do with feng shui and more to do with why you hang on to things.

The most important question is, what function does this object play in my space? It can have a symbolic function, like a photo or a card, but does it have a positive effect or a negative effect on you? If you are keeping a card from an aunt you don't like out of guilt or obligation, recycle it. If something is in your space and has no function, it is garbage. No need to be a garbage collector :)

this website has good advice. http://zenhabits.net/2006/11/steps-to-permanently-clear-desk/

 good luck..

Oh, RustIndy, I feel for ya man. That's quite the undertaking. If it were me, I'd probably move everything out first, but as I was doing it, I'd make three piles. One keep, one throw, and one give to charity. I'd also only keep the stuff I actually use/watch/listen to. Once you pare down, you might be surprised that you don't need some of the oversized storage items. For the placement of furniture, check out this post I did a while back. It might be just the thing you need. Good luck!! And please post 'after' pics!!
