Need tip for Zurich design shop

By readjulia Thumb4_medium

A friend of mine just got married and is setting up home in Zurich -- I wondered if anyone could recommend any cool home furnishing/design shops in Zurich where I can get her a gift certificate as a wedding present? I'd prefer to do it online, of course...a quick Google search wasn't popping up any quick suggestions. »MORE

Interior Design Problem - Hole of Death (or at least injury)

By Talia Family_room_medium

I need some advice (please)!  The house I bought had a cut-out between the office and the family room, with home-made stairs connecting the two spaces (there's a height difference of about 3').  To make best use of both rooms we've removed the stairs and want to close off this gaping hole (1 1/2' deep, 6 1/2' high, 3 1/2' wide).  Currently the hole is a bit of a hazard, but luckily we don't have any toddlers running around to plummet off the edge.  My dog likes to jump through it onto the couch below, so I think she’ll miss... »MORE

The Wooden Mirror

By DIY Maven Wooden%20mirror

Daniel Rozen's wooden mirror is nothing less than remarkable. It's a collection of 830 tiny wooden panels that are connected to a camera and controlled by a computer. The panels flip with the help of tiny motors and use shadow to 'reflect' images that pass by. My simplistic explanation pales in comparison to the mirror in action. (I love the sound it makes too.) Decorate your dirt.

By DIY Maven Gt030_pebblepots1_l

Martha has a tip on decorating the dirt of your indoor plants with pebbles. Of course Martha couldn’t just dump the rocks on top like I do; no, she has to arrange them in concentric circles. I must admit, the effect looks pretty cool. I bow to the master. »MORE

By DIY Maven 419_2bv4wldol__sl500_aa280_pibundle-8_topright_0_0_aa280_sh20_

Baby wipes are kind of like duct tape. Even if you don’t have a baby in the house or repair duct work on a regular basis, it’s not a bad idea to have both on hand. Books have been written extolling the versatility of our favorite grey tape, but if you haven’t heard about the awesome power of the butt wipe, here’s some alternative uses: Water-less pet baths for Fido or Fluffy. Remove crayon marks from painted walls, woodwork and furniture. They’re great for quick clean-ups on surfaces in the bathroom, car or even office. Remove stains from clothes, furniture... »MORE

Julia Rothman shares ideas for making a tile-able design, even out of quite complex drawing with lions and vines! First, draw your pattern on the middle of the page. Then cut the drawing in half, and tape the blank sides together. Repeat by cutting in half horizontally, and then tape. Fill in the open space with art, and you're on your way. How to Make Vista Look Like XP and Vice Versa.

By DIY Maven Windows-vista

I, for one, have not made the switch from XP to Vista, nor do I plan to. But I do have to admit, there are some cool features of Vista that I wouldn’t mind having. Adam Pash over at Lifehacker has an excellent article that describes how you can incorporate some of Vista’s best attributes into XP including a better Explorer, the Snipping Tool (for screen shots) and Flip 3D, just to name a few.But let’s say you’ve already made the switch to Vista and are nostalgic for XP. No worries. Check out the video on Cnet to help you... »MORE
