Modern Platform bed

By rafaelmontilla Soho%20bed2

This bed is something right out of Goldeneye. No, not the James Bond thriller. We're speaking reverently of Goldeneye, the one-time home of Ian Fleming in Jamaica. This modern platform bed would look perfect there ' sleek and perfectly coifed ' just like Bond. A wide platform of oak leads to two expansive matching nightstands. The headboard blocks the view of prying eyes while offering you a place to properly prop your head. Don't worry about your pillows coming up missing in action during a night of dangerous liaisons. Fear not. The headboard will never fail in its mission. »MORE

DIY Embossed Wall.

By Chrisjob Leaves

Here's a great idea from the happy homemaker: the diy embossed wall. Simply make a stencil (dinosaurs are essential), and fill with spakle, then paint as you would. Provides a texture that's way more interesting than tone-on-tone, especially with a high gloss paint and hard surface, as in the photo. Via. »MORE

Automated Sprinkler Systems: Responsible or Wasteful?

By Chrisjob F381gk0fi9n7txk

This Instructable got me thinking: in the era of resource-watching and water rationing, are automated sprinkler systems more responsible, as its organized and at the right time, or wasteful, as they can water when not necessary, etc? Are lawn sprinklers EVER okay anymore? Is is different for produce gardens? »MORE

A Shipping Container Playground.

By Chrisjob Skinnersplayground12

Over the last few years, shipping containers have been recycled into everything from storage sheds to emergency houses to entire wings of homes. But none seem so useful or poetic or FUN! as Skinners Playground by Phooey Architects in Melbourne. "Many of the structural elements in the Skinners Playground are simply container cut outs that have been repositioned. The stair railings, shade overhangs, and balconies are all parts of abandoned containers. The materials are left with tell tale signs of origin, giving a feeling similar to kid-constructed tree houses and forts from found objects. The windows, carpet tiles, and fasteners at... »MORE

Crafty Ways to Tart Up Your Knobs!

By DIY Maven Monogram_a_knob_with_dimentional_letter_from_scrapbook_department_on_a_porcelain_pull

BHG has some clever ways to create custom drawer pulls for pennies. Here are some of my favorites: Great for a child's room, simply glue a dimensional letter (found in the scrapbook department of your favorite craft store) at the center of a porcelain pull.   A bit of paint breathes life into this wooden knob. A round craft mirror and by-the-yard rhinestones and a little glue bring bling to this knob. For the shabby-chic fan, a wooden knob painted white with some white and creamy-color buttons glued on with a heavy duty adhesive (BHG recommends something like E6000) might... »MORE

The BEST On-Line Guide to Residential Styles

By DIY Maven 4

REALTOR.org has, by far, the best on-line residential style guide for the layperson that I’ve come across. From Italianate to art deco to shingle and everything in between. Each style has a pictorial example and a thumbnail description. For a lengthier description, click on the individual styles. Also, the page includes an nice section called ‘Home Features’ which defines various architectural features such as dormers and roofs. For example, under the ‘roofs’ heading, we find 8 different roof types that include such styles as gambrel, mansard and pavilion-hipped. To peruse the page, visit realtor.org. For any real estate/architecture junkie, it's certainly worth a bookmark! »MORE

Tins... Millions of Tins...

By lilybee Finished_tins_medium

It's a bit of a stretch to call this a how to, as essentially you stick some paper on a baby formula tin, and that's it. My problem is the sheer quantity of these things, the kid chows his way through one a week, and it seems a shame to just toss them into the recycling, so, what else would you do with them? »MORE

Make "Mrs. Fields'" Chocolate Chip Cookies

By DIY Maven 62_l_chocolate-chips

I'm not big on posting recipes here on Curbly, but a recent tete a tete with my bud Kestrel resulted in a request for this yummy chocolate chip cookie creation. It was given to me with the title ‘Mrs. Fields’ Chocolate Chip Cookies.’ If it's one of the cookie queen’s authentic recipes, I’m really not sure. What I am sure of is, they are to DIE for. Warning: this recipe makes a very large batch, but it’s really easy to halve or even quarter.  Mrs. Fields’ Chocolate Chip Cookies2 cups butter2 cups light brown sugar1 ½ cups white granulated sugar4... »MORE

Convert an Old Ironing Board Nook into a Spicy Spice Rack.

By Chrisjob F6qlootfi9drcr1

Growing up, my best friend's house had a built-in recess for an ironing board...and it hardly got used for anything but junk mail and a standard hiding place for Easter eggs. This technique from Instructables can be used to create a great  spice rack, or any sort of built-in storage in older homes. »MORE

The Living Room is Dead; Long Live the 'Live-in' Kitchen

By DIY Maven Live_in_kitchen1

Okay, maybe the living room isn’t dead, but its prominence in the house isn’t what it used to be. Because of the way we live these days, the kitchen is the place to be. Maybe the kids are doing homework and we’re checking e-mail or paying bills, or perhaps we're entertaining. Whatever the situation, the kitchen is where the action is. Kitchen Remodeling Ideas says, “The trends in kitchen design are set to focus on comfort and usability. Imagine a kitchen that incorporates a couch, a television, a coffee table and internet access into its space.” They call this kind... »MORE

If you save calendars, greeting cards and leftover wrapping paper you could use them to decoupage something, or you could check out Real Simple’s clever ways to reuse them. 1. Instead of tucking them away where they can’t be seen, frame the images on cards or calendars in inexpensive IKEA wood frames.2. Use them as media for a mixed-media art project.3. Movin' on up...to the North side

By ruajennie 1671300_medium

My husband and I have decided that the town we live in doesn't offer much opportunity for us, so we're planning a move to Minneapolis in September (assuming at least one of us can find a job!). We were wondering if anyone in the area has suggestions on what part of the city to live in. We can spend up to about $850/month and would love to find something with character in a safe neighborhood (we had a break-in last fall and we--meaning I--are a bit worried about that sort of thing). Thanks bunches in advance! »MORE
