Actually, you can usually get the cable at hardware stores as well.

You could purchase lengths of 1x12 for the actual shelf itself. Then for the hanging hardware you could trade out the cables pictured for a small gauge chain from you local hardware store. Attach the shelf with L brackets painted to match your walls. Thean you want to use eye hooks on the shelf fronts to attach the chain to the front of the shelf and hooks to attach the chain the the wall. You achieve the same look for somewhat less. I know a home store here in Burlington VT that carries the same hanging system in your pic!
