I know this mostly has to do with exposure, but it made me think of a good rule of thumb I go by when shooting photos: always fill the frame. Meaning, zoom in on your subject (with your lens or by physically moving closer) and have them use up all or most of the space that will show up in the photo. I guarantee this will make your photos (even simple snapshots) look a hundred times better.
