Okay, these are just some ideas...stuff I might try in a pinch but I have no idea what would appeal to you.  First, am a huge fan of Canyon Black spray paint (american traditions).  This would sleek up Laura Ingalls Wilder herself, but that particular scenario is rather extreme.   Anyway,   That is probably not your first choice in color, but it would be fast and sort of one step and easy to take care of when you do refinish.  Second, you could try a wash of some sort to mute the green in your preferred direction.  That'd be more work, I think.  Finally, and it's a long shot--wallies.  Perhaps you can find a clean modern design in that vast collection that would make the sting of the green almost *intentional* or *edgy.*  They go on w/water and come off w/water.  Easy peasy.

Actually, I think my first choice would be a look at the American Traditions colors (Diymaven has them here somewhere) and see what might do the quick trick.  Budget-wise, you can get a bag of wooden drawer pulls at one of the big Arkansas based box stores, but I don't know if that would be what you want.

Good luck and sand lightly between coats.
