I'd watch a lot of movies from 1967-72, when spacey kitsch was the rage. Check out the book PAD and PAD Parties by Matt Maranian.

You could try looking at Make magazine (makezine.com), or Instructables. I think you could start with a picture of what you want it to look like, and then break it down into details- how do I do that counter? How do I do that lighting over there? And so on. Once you break it down into individual items, then it becomes much easier to figure out how to do it.
