I, like Mr. Surly, am not a big fan of the sloppy edges, but I do like the above (and below) images. I pride myself on being an amateur-amateur photographer (heh), and I wish I saw more scenes like this in person (and that way I can photograph them)! I love colour photographs, but something about BW images that strike the core of the viewer... Or maybe it's just me. Anyhow, my being an amateur-amateur photographer, I love looking at other people's work, but hate the idea of someone else's work on my wall... I refuse to buy other people's paintings as well, which is odd, because it's not like my painting is all that great (and I'm not being modest... I have no proper technique, just a love for it!). Pretty much I like my own work on my own walls... Anyway. Thanks for sharing this photographer!

I'm glad my comments did not come off as too negative as that was not my intent. One more thing, It's good that you recognize what you like and stick to your guns. Don't let anyone tell you what you like or dislike. It may be awhile, but I'll get some images to post.

I look forward to seeing your work! What intrigued me most about these particular pictures was the framing. However, the images themselves reminded me of my childhood home. Perhaps lackluster, but so is much of the landscape of middle part of the country. Although, I like to think of the landscape as being elegantly minimal. As far as the borders are concerned, they reminded me of my mother's old photograph albums, the kind with the pulpy black pages. It looked as if the pictures were ripped out of them and a bit of the black paper came off too. Chalk it up to sentimentality, but it works for me. But as you said earlier--it is all so very subjective. Now lets see those pictures...;)

While I stand by my comment I made earlier, I will concede that they only apply to the images in the fine art gallery on his website (and above). Just for the record, I do some B+W wet darkroom stuff and I can certainly appreciate the work that goes into this art. It's quite time consuming and I have the utmost respect for the craft and the people involved in it. I just don't like to see people fooled into seeing gimmicks and thinking it's great art. Thanks for pointing out my error and thanks for bringing this cool medium to light on Curbly. The next time I get in the darkroom, I'll try to print some of my own work to post here. I'll put my money where my mouth is ;)

Please don't judge Rob's abilities on these few samples. Here are some images from his editoral portfolio.

I don't want to seem like a negative nelly here, but with all due respect to Mr. Meyer, those photos are pretty gimmicky. Most of the creative, talented people here could have produced those pics. The key here is of course he did create them. Photographers who create great photos don't need to print those sloppy borders to take the emphasis away from thier lackluster images. Of course this is all subjective, and if you like the pics don't just steal one on the computer. Order a print.

Oh, and the film holder idea is novel. I have a few 4x5 junkers that I could get rid of if someone is interested.
