I don't think it's wierd at all, I think it's cool & retro. I live in a converted attic space with a tiny stairwell up and no door. I wanted a seperation of some kind so I used ikea deka across the doorway and clip on whatever I'm in the mood to use as a door. I use fabric and silk scarves, so you might need something more sturdy than deka to hold heavy fabric.
That was very popular in the Great Depression era. It is a very good, economical way of heating just portions of your house.

I've read in various places that people use doorway hangings in their homes, so it definitely isn't unheard of. According to this forum (http://www.exisle.net/mb/index.php?showtopic=22977) this strategy has sound-proofing benefits as well, which may be a bonus. :)
