When my kids were pretty little, it was difficult for them to do the drinking-out-of-hands thing. This was much easier than my helping them all the time, and had nothing to do with germs or lack thereof. It was quite useful for about a year, and didn't coddle them or stunt their growth or fumigate their environment. Just one of the many different ways different parents cope.

When I was a kid I ate dirt, fell into smaller brooks and got grazes everywhere nearly daily. And it looks like I'm still alive.
In fact I should still eat more dirt as it might be a lot more healthier than the fast food and french fries plus Cola-Stuff. :-)
Todays kids live in a furnigated environment, are often not allowed to jump through puddles or spend most time in front of a TV. It's no wonder nearly all of them get some kind of allergy sooner or late...
Tell them to wash their hands before drinking from the faucet perhaps - at least they are standing in front of it already (even though they might not want to "enjoy" the soapy taste of freshly cleaned hands).

PS: My guess would be that the faucet attachment will collect a lot more germs over a few days than their hands.

balubalu, my guess is that her kids (most kids, actually), are not very good about washing their hands frequently, so all the germs they've collected over the day are now in the water they're drinking.

Hm, I've rarely seen a drinking faucet here in Germany. But anyway - what is wrong with simply putting your hands below the faucet and drink out of them?
Besides it might be fun for the kids to open the water pressure to the max and splashing it all over the bathroom.

Those have been around for at least 15 years--and, yes, they are brilliant. I like them because you can just leave them on the faucet, and use them or not, as you choose.
