I am going to paint a 4' x 6' piece of luan  (sp?)  with a wood frame behind it as an everchanging art  piece on my new apartment. its goingto be leaning against the wall so no worries about the weight of it. my one concern is the chalk dust... how do you keep it to a minimum and prevent it from flying all over the place??? I am going to have a lot of dark fabrics in the new space so chalk dust will show on most pieces.

my wall is bumpy as well, is it still possible to do this or would it be better just to put a chalkboard on the wall itself? looks great, nice job

What type of walls do people have, are they smooth?  I have a more bumpy texture.  Suggestions?

I just helped a client do this in her kitchen-dining area.  We put two coats of magnetic paint on first.  Then two coats of chalkboard paint over it.  I wasn't sure about the magnetic paint still working, but it did.  She uses it for kid entertainment, a place to pin up the kids' artwork, and then she also uses it when she has dinner parties.  She writes the dinner menu up on the wall.  Her guests love it.

We had an old fridge that we painted as a chalkboard. The original paint was starting to flake off, so we sanded down the doors and used chalkboard spray-paint on them. We glued a thin wooden border around both doors, and now everyone wants to draw on our fridge!

I've been searching for anyone who's painted their fridge with chalkboard paint.  Any suggestions for painting on vinyl?

wooks, the finish will get even better after you draw and erase a few masterpieces.

Hey just to follow up, my chalkboard paint came out nice and matte after another coat - the tin says you should sand between coats which'd probably help more too.

My kitchen now has an awesome chalkboard - thanks for the great post :)
