Personally I think signage is key to having a successful garage sale.
If people don't know how to get to your house, no one will come!

Great ideas Ivy. The only thing I'd add is if you have children let them help by selling cans of pop. You don't have to make much, if any, profit but it keeps the kids busy and teaches them how to handle money. Not to mention customers love not having to stop somewhere to get a drink on hot days. I let my kids keep all the money they took in. It wasn't profit but a big help to have them occupied. They loved it.

Not Responsible for Accidents. Have the sign clearly visible, this protects you from the occasional sunday drivers that don't pay attention to the road and also the occasional mishap of kids tripping over stuff.
