In home shopping TV they sometimes sell small versions of fridge air ionizers. Every time I see that your food stays more fresh, etc. I wonder why fridge manufacturers don't build those into the fridge...

I own the older version of the ionic breeze - the Quadra and it collects a bunch of nasty grey gunk on the collection plates, so I guess it's working. I keep the ionic breeze in my bedroom and sleep with the door closed and thus far haven't had any health issues. After I first got it, I noticed less "mucus" upon waking. Also Sharper Image had a new attachment called the Ozone Guard that goes on the ionic breeze that turns the ozone into pure oxygen. It looks like the new models may have the ozone guard built in.

Sheez, that Wikipedia article is kinda scary. I'm a big fan of Consumer Reports and will believe pretty much anything they say. I'm with you, Manzabar, I'll pass for now and stick with the small aircraft engine/Honeywell air purifier. And thanks for the info!!!

Whether they work seems to be a matter of who you ask. Some people claim they work great and others say the don't help. I thought they were a neat idea but back on '04 or so Consumer Reports issued a statement indicating these things could be dangerous. Apparently if you use one of these ionic air purifiers in a small, enclosed room; it's possible to build up unsafe levels of ozone. Sharper Image has supposedly made changes to the Quadra to fix that, but I still don't know if I'd want one in my house. For more info, check out these articles on Wikipedia: the Sharper Image, Air purifier and Air ioniser.
